We try to say it as it is, and as briefly and succinctly as we can!
We aim to do everything we can to make staying here a positive experience.
Greener Camping
Because of our special location set in heritage unspoilt countryside we are only able to operate legally as a camping site by being a Greener Camping Club members only ‘Certified Campsite’. We are obligated to the issuing authority, to ensure that at least one guest on every pitch is a member of The Greener Camping Club. Membership costs £12 per year and this amount can be added to your holiday fee at the time of booking if you are not already a member. A proportion of the membership fee goes back to certified sites for environmental improvement projects including the planting of one tree for every new member who is enrolled. The terms and conditions of membership to the Greener Camping Club apply to camping at Cilrath Wood Camp Site. To find out more about the club, please visit The Greener Camping Club website.
How To Book
To book or check availability, use the booking tool at the end of each page. If you have any questions at all, you can contact us using the information below.
Email: camping@cilrath.co.uk
or
use the on-line contact form.
Payment
We request a 30% non-refundable deposit when booking a camping pitch. Receipt of the deposit secures your booking.
The remaining balance is due 30 days prior to arrival. Please note that it is upon receipt of your deposit that the payment (£10) for your Greener Camping Membership has been made. If we do not receive your balance 30 days before your arrival, we will assume you have abandoned your holiday and booking, and we will release the dates for others to book. For short lead-time bookings – ie. those booked less than 30 days before arrival, the full amount will be requested to secure the booking.
Cancellations by You
In the event of needing to cancel your booking we encourage you to consider asking us to transfer your booking to another date more convenient for you. We can however outside of 14 days of your arrival date offer you a refund minus 20% of the total cost of the campsite booking and the cost of any Greener Camping Club membership fees.
We cannot refund or transfer the Greener Camping Club membership fee, which remains valid for you to use.
Cancellations by us
We reserve the right to cancel a camping holiday at short notice if we are unable to provide a safe camping environment, due to extreme weather conditions, ill health, fire, flooding or any other extenuating circumstances beyond our control. Under such circumstances, your full pitch payment will be returned to you. We cannot accept liability or responsibility for any loss, including consequential loss, caused by cancellation.
We cannot refund the Greener Camping membership fee which remains valid for you to use.
Special Coronavirus condition
If, as a result of Government restrictions on campsites we are forced to cancel your holiday we will offer to book you another suitable date subject to availability or make you a full refund for the price you paid for your pitch. We cannot refund the Greener Camping Club membership fee, which remains valid for you to use. If it is necessary to postpone until the following year your Greener Camping Club membership will be carried over to the end of that year.
Cilrath wood Camping is a vehicle free area.
All the pitches are off-road with no vehicle access. Pitches are accessible on foot using mown footpaths and tracks and on the days you set up and break camp we may often (but not always) be available to assist with moving your equipment to meadow pitches with our small farm trailer pulled by our vintage Landrover or tractor. For the rest of the time we provide a wheelbarrow for you to use. So it goes without saying that to camp at Cilrath Wood you MUST be physically mobile and KEEN to embrace an active outdoor lifestyle.
Pedal cycles and skate boards may not be used on the camp site.
Arrival & Departure Times
Arrival time is between 1400 – 19.00 but if you would like to arrive and pitch up earlier please give us a ring and ask, as it may well be possible. Departures are required before 11am. If you cannot avoid arriving later than -19.00 you must let us know in advance so that we can ensure someone is here to check you in.
Vehicles and parking
There is a designated parking area with room for only one vehicle per pitch, which is approximately 600 yards away, leaving the remaining area of Cilrath wood Camping a vehicle free area.
We aim to maintain good ground conditions for access routes and pitches but this is subject to the weather and the time of year. It is always a good idea to have some wellies with you.
If parking for an additional vehicle is essential this must be booked in advance, there is an additional charge of £6 a day/£40 a week and it may be required to be parked separately on another area a further walking distance away.
Pedal cycles and skate boards may not be used on the camp site.
Campfires and Firewood
We are pleased if you enjoy having a campfire so we have provided raised fire bowls on each pitch. Apart from this, fires are only allowed in the designated campfire places in the communal areas and these must not be repositioned or enlarged. Fires should not be left unattended or made to be excessively large and they should be supervised until they have completely died down or been extinguished. Fires should not be lit in very dry and/or windy conditions. In particularly adverse dry and/or windy conditions, we may require that no fires are lit and existing fires are immediately extinguished to protect land and property from an uncontrolled wild fire breaking out.
A full sack of seasoned hardwood can be bought for £5. It is not permitted to remove wood from the woodland for burning or any other purpose. Rubbish or plastic must not be burnt on the fires.
Metal grids are available to use for cooking over the fire bowls. Disposable BBQs are not permitted to be used on our campsite, they scorch the ground and generate unnecessary waste. We have BBQs on a stand available to hire – £10 for the duration of your stay. An additional £10 deposit is charged which is repayable on the return of the BBQ in a clean and ‘ready to use again’ condition. We also have charcoal available to buy on site.
Woodland Pitches
Woodland pitches are small and best suited for those seeking a more wild camp adventure using smaller light weight equipment. A single tent approximately 4 metres x 4 metres and an additional small shelter works well on the woodland pitches which are covered in wood-chip and are irregular in shape and surrounded by otherwise sensitive flora. The pitches are slightly more secluded, within the fringes of the woodland, being just out of sight of the meadow to which they are joined by a narrow footpath. Each pitch has a picnic table and a fire bowl with a cooking griddle. There is no vehicle access to the woodland pitches. Wheel barrows are available to assist you carry equipment
Children
We are pleased if children explore, learn and play around the designated campsite acreage, which is made up of old meadow, woodland and a conservation lake and streams. However, the area is a traditionally worked farmstead and a sensitive conservation haven, which has obvious and hidden dangers including deep water, steep drops, trip hazards, barbed wire, farm animals, thorny bushes, nettles, poisonous wild plants and fungi, potential moving tractors, machines and electric fences and more. It is not possible or appropriate to remove or mitigate all hazards and anyone booking a pitch at Cilrath Wood Camping must use common sense, not take or allow unnecessary risks and
- make their own risk assessments
- supervise their children at all times and all vulnerable persons in their care
- ensure good behaviour and respectful treatment of their surroundings
Consideration for others
Cilrath Wood Campsite is intended for those who want a peaceful setting and to enjoy nature at its best. Sound systems and radios are only to be used at a volume low enough not to be heard by others and only quiet talking is permitted after 11pm. Before 11pm acoustic instruments can be played but campers who are persistently disturbing others on the site will be required to leave the site without receiving a refund. If you are arriving back at the site after being out for the evening, please do so quietly so as other campers are unaware of your movements.
Dogs
Sorry, we do not allow dogs, no matter how well behaved. There is a wide diversity of wildlife and there is free-range livestock and poultry nearby. The only exceptions are for a Guide dog or assistance dog, which must be kept on a lead at all times and accompanied by its owner.
Soap and Detergents
We only allow natural biodegradable soap and detergent products on site to avoid polluting our land and our watercourses. Soap, shampoo and washing up liquid are provided, you are welcome to bring your own as long as it has 100% natural ingredients and is biodegradable.
Recycling and Rubbish
A condition of camping here is that you separate your rubbish and take it to our recycling area, where you will find bins for glass, cans and plastic, paper, cardboard, batteries, gas canisters and food waste. All items to be recycled have to be rinsed out, and anything that is not recyclable can be placed in the general rubbish bin.
Chemical Toilet Disposal
We have NO facility to dispose of this on-site.
Smoking
If you smoke, please dispose of your fully extinguished cigarettes in the bin. Smoking in open-air communal areas is only permissible if done so down wind of, and with express permission from everyone in the vicinity.
Badgers, foxes, squirrels and other wildlife
There is an abundance of wildlife here and at night you might hear some of the creatures close by. They may be attracted by the presence of any food you have brought and by food waste. Simple precautions need to be taken, including storing food in sealed containers and rinsing out your recycling and putting it in the bins provided on a daily basis. Don’t leave food scraps lying around and make sure your tent is zipped up at bedtime.
Mobile Phones
There is reasonable 3G reception on the site provided by all the usual mobile phone service providers. There are shared facilities to charge your phone in The Shed. We cannot guarantee the security of phones whilst they are being charged and they are left entirely at the owners risk. A modest secure docking arrangement for each pitch is provided and whilst these facilities cannot prevent forced removal they will prevent phones simply being picked up and removed.
Property Loss
We live in an area, which has the lowest recorded crime rate in the UK but please take sensible precautions to safeguard your property. We cannot be held responsible for any lost or stolen property.
Bivouac/wild camp
We have special spots around the site that are ideal for a night out under the stars to get even closer to nature. If you bring your own tarp/hammock/bivvi bag you are welcome to spend ONE night of your stay away from your camp pitch in one of these spots but we ask that you do not light a fire or cook food there, do not create any disturbance to the wildlife with noise and remove all evidence of your stay afterwards.

For the rest of the time we provide a wheelbarrow for you to use. So it goes without saying that to camp at Cilrath Wood you MUST be physically mobile and KEEN to embrace an active outdoor lifestyle.
Fires should not be lit in dry windy conditions.
